Strengthening Markets in Mexico City

The government is committed to enhancing public markets as vital community and economic centers in Mexico City, supporting local vendors and sustainability initiatives.

Strengthening Markets in Mexico City

The Government of Mexico City has decided to strengthen public markets as engines of the economy and spaces for community organization. In a recent meeting with market vendors, the commitment to work hand in hand with them, the boroughs, and society to maintain these spaces as pillars of the city was reaffirmed.

Most market vendors are women who, in addition to managing their businesses, take care of domestic work and their families. Therefore, the Public Care System is promoted, which will include services such as childcare centers, public laundries, and affordable dining near the markets.

The markets will also focus on being environmentally responsible, promoting innovation and sustainability. These places are not only commercial spaces but also represent the heart of communities, serving as centers of supply, meeting, and identity for over 500 years.

In a meeting attended by the Head of Government, mayors, and representatives of the markets, measures were agreed upon to provide certainty, security, and development for these spaces. One billion pesos will be allocated from the Mercomuna program so that social support vouchers can be used in the markets and local stores, thus stimulating the area's economy.

240 million pesos will be invested in the maintenance of the markets, modernizing their facilities and strengthening security with civil protection protocols and training for vendors. Additionally, administrative procedures will be simplified both in-person and digitally.

As part of the strategy, the markets will be promoted as tourist destinations during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, designing routes and exploring the installation of screens to enjoy the matches in community. Sustainability measures will be implemented, monitoring with cameras connected to C5, and extortion will be combated with the application of new legislation.
